Caravans, Trailers and Boats

You may be towing or wanting to tow, beware if you took your Car test after 1st January 1997, which includes a retest if you have lost your licence for any reason. You are restricted to towing trailers with a gross laden weight (MAM--maximum authorised mass) not exceeding 750Kg. Under the current regulations there are a few exceptions make use of the 'Do I need a Category B+E' page, to see if you are within the current guidelines. Throughout Sussex there are lots of you towing double horse trailers, large caravans, heavy boats or commercial trailers you may not be entitled to tow, and may need to take an addition test.

Towing Training Course

Towing Training sessions would normally start with a chat about the training, followed by driving instruction for each four hour trailer training session, to bring you to the required standard and above. Many of our customers already have the entitlement to drive trailers (B+E) so don't need to take a further test, but come to us to develop the skills and gain the confidence to tow before they take their own trailers caravans or Horse trailers on the road. Lessons will normally include trailer use and the law, loading and coupling, forward driving on all types of road, plus reversing at our large off road training ground in Woodmancote, Near Henfield, West Sussex.

If taking the B+E trailer training, followed by the test please consider that the driving standard is much higher than for the normal car test, and the time required to prepare for the test should not be underestimated .To take this test you must hold a current full driving licence for B class vehicles.

Our Tow car is a 2007 Kia Sorento CRDI XS, 5 speed diesel. Having won many worldwide 4X4 awards, The Sorento has been voted 'Tow car of the year' by 'The Caravan Club'. an award that we would agree with. The Sorento is available for your use while training, or you can supply  your own tow unit, which must be capable of towing a trailer with a MAM of 2600kg. or for medium to large family saloons and estates we have a caravan with a MTPLM of 1119kg

For training we use an 'Ifor Williams' trailer which is Supplied and serviced by 'Universal Trailers' of Coneyhurst, West Sussex. To comply with all the current regulations for the B+E Tests we use a Box van Trailer, our 'Ifor Williams BV 105G' trailer has a MAM of 2584kg, this suitable for many of our customers who come for training so they can tow a horse trailer, as it is very similar in size and gives the right experience required.
